The role of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease is reviewed. A physical basis of MRI is depicted, as well as principles of forming MRI images using various techniques: T1-and T2-weighted images, stress-MRI, contrast-enhanced cardiac MRI, magnetic resonance coronary angiography. Special emphasis is paid to the importance of certain techniques of MRI in the diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis and myocardial ischemia, acute myocardial infarction and its complications, postinfarction cardiosclerosis, hibernating myocardium.
